At this level, students will start learning phonics in order to prepare them to read and speak. High-frequency words are introduced and speaking practice begins. This level uses "Phase Phonics" starting at Phase 2, helping students develop their listening skills. By the end of the level children should be able to read some vowel-consonant (VC) and consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, and to spell them out.
